    The larger Nootka Crisis is known variously by names such as the Nootka Sound Crisis, the Nootka Sound Controversy, the Great Spanish Armament, and other variations.       The Nootka Sound Controversy was a major dispute that almost caused Spain and Great Britain to go to war. The dispute involved claims of who owned the pacific northwest. Spain claimed to have possession but Great Britain threatened war over such claim.   The sound was called Mowichat by the local tribe the Nuu-chah-luuth, and it’s believed to have got its Nootka Sound name due to some confusion when Captain James Cook for Author: Julian Cheatle.

      In the late 18th century, Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island was the centre of international diplomacy and the commercial maritime fur .
